CHAPTER 11: An Unexpected Find

“Alack, what trouble was I then to you?”

The Tempest

The next morning, Zoë was so tired she fell asleep in math class. Now she stifled a yawn as Ms. Robertson rambled about truth and illusion in Robert Browning’s narrative poem, “The Ring and the Book.” “The whole truth cannot be presented,” she said, looking around the classroom. “It changes with each speaker.”

How am I going to get through the day? Zoë wondered, closing her eyes. She had to be at the site this afternoon. Afterwards, they were going to Abbey’s house to work on their project.

She thought about her meeting with Josh yesterday, the scene playing and replaying in her mind like a home movie. A beautiful woman has just asked me for a date. Had he really said that? It was the wee hours of the morning before she had been able to fall asleep. For most of the night, she had looked through the window. The moon was a perfect ripe apricot, making the night all silvery. The grey light of dawn was peeking in her window when she finally drifted off. This morning she had been so tired, it took all her energy just to get out of bed. “Wouldn’t you agree, Zoë?” The voice seemed to be coming from far away. She opened her eyes, startled. Ms. Robertson was standing over her. “I assume you did the reading.”

She shook her head, feeling herself flush. Titters came from the back of the classroom. Mercifully, the bell rang and kids began pushing books inside their backpacks. The teacher gave Zoë a sharp look before turning away.

Abbey came to stand by her desk, her bushy hair tamed neatly in a French braid. “We better go now,” she said. “Matt won’t wait if we’re late, and I don’t feel like walking all the way to Port au Choix.”

Zoë stood up, shoved her books into her backpack. “I forgot your cousin was driving us,” she said.

Abbey glanced at her watch. “He said he’d pick us up as soon as school got out. He has an appointment at the bank. Guess we’ll have to eat our lunch on the way.”

As they walked outside, Zoë told Abbey about her visit with Linda Carter. “Some professor is going to give a lecture on the Maritime Archaic Indians.”

“Where at?”

“The museum, I think. Linda will let me know.”

“There’s Matt,” Abbey said, as a red pickup truck pulled up in front of the school.

He let Zoë and Abbey off directly across the road from the site.

Monty, the site supervisor, greeted them with a warning. “Patty’s not in a very good mood. She seems desperate, urging everyone to work faster, dig more holes.”

Zoë nodded her understanding. She knew the pressure Patty was under and how difficult it was for her. Time was running out. Every day that went by without finding evidence of the habitation site, she became more dispirited. The team now dug even in rainy and foggy weather.

Abbey looked toward the woods where Dora’s son, Jimmy, and Bonnie Humby were digging.
